The idea originated from his teenage son at the time – Why not ask Nike to create a custom shoe honoring Doernbecher’s brave young patients? 7 years later, the Doernbecher Freestyle project byNike Creative Director for Global Presentation, Michael Doherty, raised over $3 million dollars for the venerable Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation, a integral part of the Oregon and southwest Washington communities that provides essential pediatric care. This past January, as with every year, 6 former patients of the hospital system were named to be participants of the project by their therapists and caregivers. One of the participant was Cole Johanson from Portland, Oregon, who overcame Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. His choice of design medium was the iconic Air Jordan III Retro, the first of the Air Jordan franchise to have the visible Air Sole Unit, the cracked cement/elephant pattern, and the legendary Michael Jordan Jumpman insignia. Cole Johanson’s Air Jordan III (AJ3), along with the rest of the Nike Doernbecher Freestyle VII Collection, will be available at NikeTown and Nike online outlets in the next few weeks. 100% of the proceeds will go toward the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and its foundation.
